Kanyashree Prakolpo

KanyashreePrakalpo is a scheme launched by the Government of West Bengal, India, aimed at improving the status and well-being of girls, particularly those from disadvantaged families. Objectives

1. Prevent Child Marriage: To delay the age of marriage for girls to the legal age of 18 years.
2. Promote Education: To encourage girls to continue their education till at least the completion of their higher secondary education.
3. Empower Girls: To enhance the self-esteem and self-worth of girls in the community.

Components

1. Annual Scholarship: Eligibility: Unmarried girls between the ages of 13 to 18 years. Amount: INR 1,000 per year.
Criteria: The girl must be enrolled in an educational institution.
2. One-Time Grant: Eligibility: Unmarried girls between the ages of 18 to 19 years. Amount: INR 25,000.
Criteria: The girl must be enrolled in an educational institution and must have turned 18 years old.

Implementation

Target Group:Girls from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Administrative Setup: The scheme is implemented through the Department of Women Development and Social Welfare, Government of West Bengal. Application Process: The application process involves filling out forms, which are available at educational institutions and government offices, and submitting them along with the required documents.

Impact

Reduction in Child Marriage: The scheme has contributed to a significant reduction in the incidence of child marriage in West Bengal.
